Movie: Up and at 'em

Somehow he's figured out how to apply the right mixture of downward and sideways pressure so as to raise himself without sliding the table out from under himself. This has cost him a good deal of frustration, but he seems very pleased with the results: free music anytime he wants it.

I have been stalking the crawling Gideon for weeks now. It has been a frustrating hunt. Most of my videos look like this one:

Amusing, adorable even, but not what I was trying to capture. Then finally, earlier this week, I got one featuring continuous crawling, not the sort of chess move, butt plant-to-butt plant activity shown above:

Good job, Gideon! Having broken the ice, he's been very obliging in giving even more. This one, for example, is simply immortal. Go, Thomas, go!

Movie: Enthusiastic lemon

Yes, I know you're not supposed to feed them lemons, but he hasn't any teeth yet so it's now or never for the funny faces.

Movie: Rain boots

Dada finally got smart and bought himself some rain boots. Splash as you might, you can't get me!

Movie: Fuh fuh

We've been practicing not eating inorganic matter (also not eating sticks and leaves) in the playground, but apparently he just couldn't resist this particular melange of sand and seaweed.

Movie: How was your day?

Pity I stopped when I did: the very next words out of his mouth were "And how was your day?" said, as always, with real interest.

Losing skills

Felix was asking this morn why he can't seem to speak Dutch anymore but mama and dada still can. I explained that we’d been speaking it longer so have more to forget, and that he has forgotten it only temporarily and would remember it all when we next visited. I proposed we read more Jip en Janneke, and that turned into a morning of his asking if we could play Jip en Janneke. For some reason this ended up with his being Janneke and me being Janneke's mother.

Even though I do believe his Dutch will come back if it's given a chance, it's still sad to see him lose it and very much so to find him conscious, and unhappy, of the process of loss.
