Gideon and the MOTU

This movie is not so much meant to be watched as it is meant to be listened to, with your eyes closed, with someone next to you to assure you that what you are hearing is not coming from an actual dangerous creature but from a three-year-old with a vivid imagination and a possibly abnormal larynx.

MOTU for those who do not know is an acronym for Masters of the Universe, better known simply as "He-Man." MOTU is arguably Gideon's first independently discovered passion. It fits, it fits.

Movie: Gideon rides

This one comes with a story, and don't stop me if I've told you it. Felix, as you may recall, was quite the speed demon on his walkabike, but truth is he didn't take to it right away: the bike showed up on his second birthday, a gift from saba and safta, but he hardly touched it until about half a year later. Good thing: by then he was tall enough for it, and, as important, had learned to stop when you told him to.

Gideon is taller than Felix was at that age, and even more independent, which is really saying something. In fact, he's so independent that he decided to go and get himself a bike. I was walking downtown with him a couple of months ago and he suddenly took a left up an alley. I followed and found him in front of the door to a tiny bike shop (really, how many does Fairfax need?). He knocked on the window, the proprietor came around, and before I could advise him not to let the bull into his shop he opened the door and said "Hi Gideon!" Gideon, taking this as his due, walked right in, pulled a helmet off the wall, and got onto a walkabike sitting there next to the counter. He then walked it out of the shop. After the fourth time this happened I gave up and bought it for him. And now, not yet two, he rides:

It's not much of a movie, but it's a clear sign of things to come. And that's the problem: he definitely cannot be relied upon to stop when you tell him to, and he will soon be able to bike fast enough to get himself into real trouble. This is the sort of thing I mean when I say he's a more challenging child than his brother.

Movie: Gideon WALKS

Babies are not stupid, they know when you're trying to pressure them. It's a counterproductive strategy, really, to try to get them to a milestone they aren't ready to pass. But I tell you we just couldn't help it these past two or three months. It was obvious Gideon had all the parts of walking...and yet he just wouldn't do it. Today I tried something a bit different. Instead of letting him hold one finger when we strolled along together, I held him by his overall straps, thereby seeming to give support, and also being in a position to cease doing so if I thought he wouldn't miss it. The results, the very, very exciting results:

So there you are, and there we are. He's going to be simply impossible from now on.

Movie: Learning to Land

There's really nothing better than setting out to teach a baby something and succeeding. I've been trying to teach Gideon how to get off a piece of furniture for several weeks now. His instinctive method is to throw himself off head first. Given that our furniture is low and his neck quite strong this is not an altogether bad way to go about it, but one day he may find himself on higher furniture, and besides, it doesn't look good. So we did this: land on your head, try again, land on your feet, can't be beat. Took a while--and it's a long video, too--but it worked!

Another "I like to throw things on the floor" video, but note how routinely he favors his right hand. At this age, and even still today, Felix is apt to use both hands indiscriminately (and still apt to throw stuff on the floor, though less often). Note, too, how quick he is, and how he does not attempt to grab kashi bits that he has discovered to be beyond his range. Clever baby!

I haven't checked the archives because once I do I will have to check, too, to see if there's any hint as to when they cease this uber-irritating behavior, and I'm afraid the news there would be bad.

Movie: Gideon grabs!

It's not the most grabby he's been, but it's a great start! Realizing you have hands is the first step to rather a lot of other things you'll need to do.

UPDATE, a few hours later: Gideon started grabbing yesterday or perhaps the day before. What a thrill to see him start to make the connection between those things that wave around in front of his face and appendages under his control. I basked in the glow of his progress for about 24 hours, that is to say until this afternoon on the playground when he grabbed my sunglasses, ripped them off my face, and threw them on the ground. Right: first comes coordination, then comes mischief. Still, it's quite incredible to see him hourly gaining increased control of his hands and arms, whatever use he may put them to aside.

UPDATE, 18 August: His tendency to try to grab things while still clutching each hand in the other is abating, leading to individual control of each appendage. On the other hand, he is still sometimes raising his feet as well as his hands when he reaches for something. It's adorable.

He's like a terrier with a rat. Thank goodness no teeth.

Which leads us to an interesting question: should we use a pacifier this time? We did with Felix, and it was a powerful tool for sure. But we suffered for many, many nights when Felix awoke, missed his pacifier, and cried to have it replaced. Many, many, many nights. And, too, it has affected his dental development, though with the pacifier gone that matter is fixing itself. Gideon is not (yet) a terribly challenging baby, but all babies offer certain conundrums.
